With apologies and all due respect to William Shatner. You’ll always be Capt. Kirk to me!

I wasn’t even 3 years old when the original Star Trek series was broadcast, yet some of my earliest memories are of watching that show. I’m told I used to pinch my ears in order to make them grow like Mr. Spock’s. My first love was definitely Lt. Uhuru. I noticed those legs early! I was looking at her official website today, and Nichelle Nichols remains a strikingly attractive woman.
Cheers!

I never liked William Shatner. He was always way too American for my tastes; arrogant, self-assured, overweight womanizer that he was. Sir Patrick Stewart’s where it’s at, with Avery Brooks coming in a close second.
William Shatner is Canadian, so how could he be too American.
Shatner was a cowboy that’s how.
I understand the feeling depicted here; I was born in 1961 & literally grew up on Star Trek & the syndicated reruns. From Columbia House, I got the entire series on VHS tapes. I collected all of the movies that still featured the original cast. I’d tape the animated cartoon series whenever they showed a new episode.
While I didn’t like the spinoffs & other sequals nearly as much, they still carried on from the same traditions set forth from Gene Roddenberry’s vision. At first, I also was reluctant to see the newest “reboot” Star Trek…Yet, I was pleasantly surprised when they did the groundwork necessary to keep true to the original even as the history & individual destinies drifted from their original historical course. Some changes were major (as well they SHOULD be, whenever time travel is involved) & some changes minor…Yet, even though some aspects of the individual lives of the characters would differ from the original series, I could still watch those old tapes & contemplate “I’d bet THIS would change a bit,” or “that would probably still occur, but for a different reason.”
All in all, it seemed to me that, while much of the “reboot” would definitely make big impacts on the characters, the missions they performed during the original series would have still been assigned & carried out, but enough details would have changed to make an interesting exercise of the imagination.
Kudos, to the new cast & the writers…They stayed true to Gene Roddenberry’s vision (at least, as I saw it) while still provoking a sense wonder & freshness that can keep the old legends viable, all over again.
