For the record, I’m still not watching the channel formerly known for its SciFi. I don’t trust them to not pull the plug once some bean-counter points out some reality TV show staring people that dress up as zombies to host a cooking show while living in a house that _MAY_ be haunted while the ghostbusters of the week, consisting of various “experts,” a supposed celebrity/scientist (either or both), and a random member of the public go “OH! What was that!” every few minutes. Oh! God! What have I just done?!

But Lost Girl, Warehouse 13, Alphas and Being Human are so awesome!
Yeah, but I’m still protesting the end of SG-U simply because “reality” shows make more profit.
That’s business, I’m afraid, and, in business, numbers talk.
Something went wrong, though, when numbers became the *only* thing to which business listens, anymore; I agree with you, there.
I guess I’m missing out over here. AFN is running way behind on airing shows from that network, and by that time, I’ve already watched the ones I want to see through finding them online.
And for those of us who don’t have full cable it is the only place to watch Dr. Who.
I get you. I hate that every time I get involved in one of their series, they end it.
i miss Eureka !
I can’t get past the fact that a network devoted to sci fi makes the worst sci fi movies ever made. I’m hoping “Science” network fills the void.
Honestly, I have basically stopped watching the channel myself ever since they did the stupid decision of changing the channel’s name. Most of the shows on it are horrid, and quite honestly, I can get new episodes of whatever i am watching via online legal programs simpler and with no commercials.
And the reason they did it? Money. They couldn’t trademark/copyright “Sci-Fi” for “branding”. So… Syfy. Something they can register and “brand” with.
As a previous poster said, it’s business, but pretty damn stupid. I personally don’t think hauntings are “sci-fi” unless ghostbusters with non-existent tech are involved. Seriously dislike reality TV, and as another poster said… no reason at all for “wrasslin’” to be on there.
Eureka got canned because it was the 3rd best rated show they had, but one of the most expensive… they wanted to reduce their budget to be “competitive with reality programming”!! (/rant)
Tbh, I stopped watching actual tv about 8 or so years ago. I can watch any new favorites that friends recommend to me online anyways or buy the dvd’s to support the companys.
I quite frankly got tired of all the ads, poliitical/religious/fear mongering ect. The wierd switch to digital and people who were supposed to be experts knew less than a 4 year old. I would never pay for cable as with 100+ channels there would probably only be a handful(maybe 2 handfuls) of shows I would watch on a regular basis. I’m in my 30s though I still enjoy my cartoons/anime if for nothing else background noise, simple entertainment or when I’m in the company of young children. (I actually have my 7 month year old Niece in my lap as I type this and we are watching Danny Phantom :3)
The changes to SciFi (and other channels) were duly noted as I work nights and the woman I work for has cable. I knew what the channel used to be like and now… I stick to other forms of entertainment during my idle times for the 12 hour shifts. In fact the only time I actually turn on the tv for myself when I’m there is to use it as a monitor (60″ rear projection tv as a computer monitor is nothing to sneeze at) And I’ve apparently just turned this into a rant so I’m gonna shut my keyboards virtual lips up
Long time reader of TMI. Keep up the good work, and I look forward to more Spicy Neko Shenanigans :3
I stopped in 2004, too! I catch things at friends’ now and then. Actually watched FaceOff tonight. The second time I’ve seen it, but it’s excellent. Then again, I wanted to be an Effects Artist, so it’s fun seeing people trying so hard to do it. I’ve seen Ghost Hunters, too. So fake. Looks like in the last 8 years everything has become “Reality TV.” Thanks MTV! Why didn’t you stick to music? I have to agree that their Sci Fi movies are the worst ever. If they’d put the effort into those that they do into the commercials they (used to?) made… wow. Thunbs up on the Anime/Cartoons. Keep enjoying! I do, and I’ve got a few years on you.
TMI is much more entertaining than TV.
One of the scientists I happen to have met once, was interviewed for a show like that. In the interview, they mentioned what they wanted to see, and the scientist said that he couldn’t do that as it would violate not only his ethics, but what he knows to be true. The interview ended there. They wanted a “scientist” (AKA any old lab guy who likes ghost stuff) to go on and explain SOME of the aspects of what is happening, but be at a loss for some of the weirder stuff and look baffled on TV. They want to make science look like it can’t explain everything and keep the mystery alive and keep religion looking like it has the answers.
Pretty much. And when they can’t get a scientist to actually give them the interview they want, they’ll dishonestly edit the interview to make it look like the scientist is saying the exact opposite of what he’s actually saying (History Channel does that a lot with their Ancient Aliens drivel). I know a lot of scientists who won’t take interviews from TV shows because of that.
I’ll stick with netflix, Crackle, and HuluPlus for my viewing pleasure. $16/month compared to $40 for 60/40 TV (60% commercials/40% show/movie)
Since this is a SyFy’s gone stupid sorta thread. can anyone tell me what “Wrestling” has to do with Sci-Fi programing??????
I have no idea. But, I did see it as the beginning of the end for Sci-Fi (it preceded the name change by several years).
Well, it covers the ‘fiction’ part at least, and maybe ‘science’ as well when you try to explain how the leverage actually would work for the ‘moves’…
One of the times I am glad to be european without syfylis affliction…
It’s because the current head of the channel used to be in charge of USA, and is trying to run noScience lousyFiction channel the exact same way. One of my sister’s friends actually works for the channel- he said his direct boss recently quit over what’s going on there and he’s not sure how much longer he’s going to stick around, due to the way the management is behaving: they want to appeal to a pretty much everyone but science fiction fans anymore.
I don’t get why they’re putting on all the crappy ghost hunter reality shows or wrestling, anyway. You’d think that at the very least they could get the rights to a bunch of old shows and B-movies really cheap (you know, Red Dwarf, the original Lost in Space, Flash Gordan, ect). But I guess that showing four hours a night of idiots with night vision cameras stumbling around old houses is pretty cheap, too.
And I will at least give them credit for Face/Off. Yes, it’s a competitive reality show, but it’s about costume designers actually showing their skills, and some of the stuff they’ve come up with has been really cool.
Syndication of old science fiction shows is pretty much how the channel got started. Should I feel old for remembering?
I like Faceoff because of the talent and artists on the show. I’ve always loved special effects so watching the contestants build their creations is really cool. Thankfully they don’t push the drama like other reality shows. I also enjoy Warehouse 13 but when that’s gone there’s nothing left on the channel for me.
I canceled my cable connection a year ago after years of decreased use.
For the price of a month cable I can buy/rent a couple of tv series and half a dozen movies via dvd/Itunes ,I get all my news via the net and sports via streaming or I go to the pub/live.
I still watch SYFY.I did boycot Fox for a short while after Firefly was cancelled. I ended up going back to watch Bones. I know I’m a horrible person.
I stopped watching TV on a regular basis a couple of years back too and honestly don’t miss it much. However if you can get access to Space, the Canadian Sci-Fi network, I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised.
I was just cast in a show on the syfy network but they pulled out at the very, VERY last minute. Now a whole cast and crew is waiting and hoping we can pitch the show to another network or something.
So, we’re talking good science fiction with talented cast, crew, and writers? Why hasn’t The Science Channel snapped it up?
