If you’ve seen the animated Ghost in the Shell movie, then you may find the live-action version disappointing.

I’m not saying it’s a bad movie, overall I enjoyed it. Scarlett Johansson was fairly well cast. Okay she was well cast but the whitewashing issue was with me for the whole movie. And how hard would it have been to put a goatee on Takeshi Kitano (Aramake)? And why the mini plotline where Batou gets his cyber eyes? Also the scene with the prostitute seemed dry and pointless.

But my real problem was all the scenes taken from the animated movie. I understand making a new story. And I get making an homage to the original anime. But after third or fourth nearly identical scene, but for a different story, I felt myself spending more time with the original movie than the one I was watching.

I liked it, but I don’t feel the urge to see it again.

Addendum: I didn’t mean that I necessarily thought this was a case of whitewashing. SJ had the look for the role. Yet, at the same time there are several Asian actresses that had the looks and chops to play the role. Basically, I’m conflicted, which was a distraction from the movie.
