An old house, a geek, a cute transvestite, a very tall lesbian, and at least one ghost–what could happen? – Adult situations and artistic nudity. Not suitable for children.
… OOOOOH! Starting to sew up the little dropped hints now!
Vampires are “real” in this world, but are “Gifted” descendants (kinda… not really…reaching for a good word there) of this Dilmun outcast/criminal, “Lady Banshee”, and are created and their bodies maintained by way of tiny nanomachines.
Go WAAAY back in the archives, and we have a short incident that concludes with Ace semi-voluntarily donating blood to a vampiric tabloid reporter in exchange for an end to saucy speculative articles about him and Rosa being a couple.
Earlier in THIS story arc, the Chief Surgeon told the captain she discovered unidentified, persistant nanos all through Ace’s body, though they seem to keep themselves well hidden and only act when he is injured.
Therefor: Ace got these nanos by way of the vampiress, which are a many-generations-removed hand-me-down from Lady Banshee’s suite of Dilmun nanos.
He already had “the right kind of eyes” to interface with Dilmun machines on a more limited level than a real Dilmun could. Now he has Dilmun nanos inside him that, in theory, could allow him to control Dilmun machines fully as well as SHE can… and as we can see, she has survived, meaning another confrontation between them, where they might find themselves fighting for control of ancient Dilmun machinery, is certainly possible, even likely.
Banshee did not create the self replicating nanos, the one who did was encapsulated and given a vantage point view of the out of control self replicating nano machines that made Venus uninhabitable. The grey-goo. Lady B needs a unlocked fabber to create enough nanos to grant the gift of Immortality. A gift that can not be passed on without a fabber to create the machines. They still need blood, but they are limited from reproductive functions.
When Lady Banshee showed up for the first time and Albina(sp?) is giving her a run-down on the situation on Earth she mentions that almost the only servants available are the Vladish (who have some truly crazy sounding intel on Ace that is why they won’t go near him or those under his protection.) Lady B mentions the fate of the one who created self-replicating nanos that allow the vampires to make offspring. This set of exchanges also includes B’s plans to gather up Ace and his friends up in an attempt to subjugate them. (Apparently she does not learn quickly nor well.) We also find out that she knows that Ace did not unlock all the fabbers before she fled so she can not mass produce the nano machines. It started a bit further back, but this one has most of the relevant information.

I don’t recall reading about that. Do you have a reference link?
