Ace: This shouldn't take too long. From what Rusty said I suspect most of the security restrictions have simply expired. A hundred years ago, I probably wouldn't have been able to get in and in another hundred, any Orion might be accepted.
Farah: We don't have quite that much time.
Ace: True. OK, one eye on each display, and-
Ace: Uh, how smart is the computer running the control consoles?
Farah: Smart? It's just a machine like that robot. No real intelligence. Why?
Ace: This console just switched to plain English and an alphanumeric character set, and is addressing me by name. And I'm in.
Farah: So you can remove the control lockout and stop the countdown?
Ace: Yes, and no. I can remove the control lockout with a verbal command, but not while the countdown is running. The countdown was triggered by the K'Sel seizing control. It's letting me push the clock back to 100 micro-cycles one last time, but then the ship is going to make a crash landing if they haven't relinquished control by then.
Farah: Crash? How bad?
Ace: I have the choice of deep ocean, which will be mostly survivable but would cause a major tsunami with an unimaginable death-toll, or a remote land area, which would probably kill everyone on board but only kick enough dust up into the atmosphere to make the next year or so cooler than normal.
Farah: Why not a controlled landing?
Ace: The ship's structure is compromised. It's space-worthy, but an atmospheric entry would tear it apart and rain debris across half the planet.
Farah: I have a third option. Instruct the computer to only take orders from me, and I'll order the K'Sel to stand down.
Ace: I'm not sure that would work. I'd need a compelling argument.
Farah: OK. Compelling argument.
Farah: You have a nice face and I'd hate to have it sprayed across the wall.
