The trio had packed into Ace's van.
"Ace, if this is a problem for you ..." Carly began.
Ace piped up, "No that's not it. I'm just surprised. Carly, you understand if I always thought you were a girl ..."
"Nicest thing anyone's said to me all week," Carly smirked.
"But Rocky," Ace continued, "I feel really bad about thinking you were a guy."
"Ain't nuthin', Ace." Rocky said. Gesturing back toward Carly, Rocky said, "We dated a couple times."
"Ace, if this is a problem for you ..." Carly began.
Ace piped up, "No that's not it. I'm just surprised. Carly, you understand if I always thought you were a girl ..."
"Nicest thing anyone's said to me all week," Carly smirked.
"But Rocky," Ace continued, "I feel really bad about thinking you were a guy."
"Ain't nuthin', Ace." Rocky said. Gesturing back toward Carly, Rocky said, "We dated a couple times."
Doing yet another archive run, and I just want to say how much I enjoy this particular reveal. It says so much about the characters, but also about society and assumptions. We all do it without thinking, look at someone’s appearance and treat them a certain way because of that appearance. Yet Ace is cool with the corrected reality and so were both Ricky and Carly. These characters are people I would like in real life.
Ace: “Sooo… how far along did the relationship get before you… how shall I put it? Figured out the contents weren’t quite what it said on the label?”
Carly: “…Ace, I like you, but I don’t think we’ve been friends quite long enough to tell that story.”
Ace: “Perfectly reasonable.” (long pause) “So… THAT far, huh?”
Rocky: “A-yup.”
Carly: “Dammit Ace!”
