Gina: As a single mother, I was often asked how I could be in the military when I had a child to care for. Most of the time they aren't asking why I'm not at home mothering my child, but how is it that I'm willing to risk my life when there's a loved one back home.
I suppose it's not quite the same as asking that of someone with a spouse, significant other or fiance waiting for them to come home. A widow can be expected to land on his or her feet. I risk making my boy an orphan.
In simplest terms, I serve in order to protect my child, every child, every loved one, everyone back home. In some ways, I have an advantage over many service members. I can point to projects and events with a direct impact on national security that I've worked on; even served a pivotal role.
It's practically a calling.
And if I'm ever called on to make the ultimate sacrifice, I'll do it gladly. I'll hope my boy will understand, at least, someday. But I know he'll be safer for it.
