Ace: Is there anything to what she has to say?
Sky: Yes and no. In sort of reverse order: She could give you a fight, but my money would still be on you. The business about blasters having a shot or two left is from bad entertainment shows, but it's still treated as a possibility for safety reasons. K'Sel have a bad reputation in legend, but it is undocumented. It's classified, but we never re-armed this ship. Rusty's fighter is the most dangerous thing on board. It is one thing to leave a broken starship for Terrans to find; another to leave you all a warship. The conspiracy toward “impure” Orions is largely debunked, but there is the occasional Green Purity group that spouts it, and our own conspiracy nuts keep bringing it up. It's not so odd that anyone in the top ten has died when you consider that only one of those people will make Empress, or Emperor, in a lifetime. Some people spend most of their lives in the top ten. And THE freak accident was the catastrophic failure of Habitat Plato. We lost nearly a tenth of our total population; entire bloodlines. We have laws limiting how many of a family group are allowed to live on the same habitat or station, and it's even more limited for expeditions, but they weren't being heavily enforced.
As for illness, the ones we do have to deal with are mostly genetic and pretty nasty, including the Alzheimers variant afflicting her mother and the Retired Empress. And, but she won't face it, she's been identified as being susceptible to it as well. Her mother's condition is an open secret, because she would lose her place in standing, and the resource credits that come with it, her only income, if it were acknowledged. And, I do believe she's justified in her mind that she's doing this for me. She's … kinda creepy that way toward me sometimes.
