Turn signals and brakes not working both have work around. Hand signals and as long as the clutch is a manual you can use gears easily enough to slow down (just plan well ahead) and the emergency brake to stop. Yeah, I’ve driven a car with bad brakes more than once. The smoke is an environmental, but steering is an issue. On the other hand, you’d be amazed at what you can get used to if you just have it creep up slowly enough.
Given the number of times I’ve driven off with the parking break still engaged, and not even noticed, I can’t imagine it’s at all effective for real braking.
Is won’t hold the car from moving if it is in gear and under power, but if the car is in neutral I’ve used the emergency brake to stop a car moving 25 mph, not exactly on a dime but with enough speed to lock my seat belt up.
