Pro-life in a nutshell. Look down on women for getting pregnant out of wedlock, so force girls in the church who get pregnant out of wedlock to get abortions, while telling them any girl who gets an abortion is going to hell.
My understanding is that the intent is to prevent girls from having sex until they get married. There are a lot of problems with that concept, but one of the biggest for me is that sex isn’t always a matter of choice. And even if you somehow managed to eliminate the whole nonconsensual issue, there are a lot of ways in which pressure is applied to girls to have sex.
And to boys, also.
Boys don’t. get pregnant, nor are the subjected to the same level of shame around sex Notice I don’t specify sex outside of wedlock. That is intentional because the shaming is done in ways that you can’t just flip a switch by saying “I do!” and the shame vanishes.
And have you ever noticed that the abortion laws talk about penalties for the doctor and the mother, but don’t discuss any of the responsibilities for the male who provided half the DNA.
The male penalties are court-ordered child support payments garnished from his wages, irrespective of his income level, living standard, OR in several cases to date, if he is actually the father of said child at all.
Don’t need NEW laws to ruin the man’s life over a baby; they’ve been around a long time.
…And of course now, in 2022, it’s abruptly become so much worse. Anti-abortion laws popping up all over the USA, not a single one of them grounded in medical reality or common sense.
A married woman with an ectopic pregnancy (where the fertilized egg has implanted outside the womb) has NO possibility to safely carry a fetus to term, and will suffer a horrible, slow, agonizing death herself, can no longer get the relatively simple life-saving surgery, because both she and the surgeon would be put in prison for it.
A 10 year old child, raped and impregnated by her own father, would not have been eligible for an abortion under these new, monstrously totalitarian laws, would have had to carry that bundle of evil inanimate cells to term… although the risk of both dying was pretty high… were it not for a heroic doctor who quickly packed her into a car, drove to another state which had not (yet) enacted these new laws, and performed the surgery there. Whew! A REAL child has actually been saved (and honestly she’s suffered quite enough already). His home state is still trying to throw him in jail over this (I should look for an update on that case, actually).
I respectfully submit supporters of the new laws, who believe that 10 year old girl should have been forced to (risk her life attempting to) bring another child into the world, have taken the moral possession of accessory to her father’s crime. Supporting an incestuous child rapist, trying to finish his work for him, is NOT the moral high ground!
These are just two examples of many. If these laws become federal, enforced without prudence from US coast to US coast, then the USA will immediately go from a country that refugees flee to, to a country that refugees flee FROM, where their own government is legitimately forcing them to either suffer and die horribly or rot in a prison sell for choosing not to suffer and die horribly. It’s a fully legitimate reason to flee an oppressive totalitarian country.
I’m not sure how many real life examples are comparable with Grace up there in today’s comic. In a world with so many options for birth control, I’m thinking her situation is only a modest portion. Abortion is not by any means a convenient or easy “birth control” option. Nothing “easy” about it.
There’s NO woman walking into that clinic with a flippant attitude and no respect for life. It’s always a very serious, heavy decision; a final, last resort to avert disaster.
The “Choice” position, means having the freedom to do the right thing when one absolutely must.
We’re now getting to see what happens when the USA takes its citizen’s freedom away.
