She probably was, but it would not be the first time that someone with no qualifications for a science found a breakthrough in part because they approached the problem with no preconceptions.
I can’t tell how many times when I was young that I was told ‘you can’t do that’ or ‘it won’t work’ only to find out a decade later it’s common. When I was 5-6 I asked ‘why are we waiting at this light’, I was told since it’s red we need to wait. I pointed out that since were turning right and there was nobody coming from the left there wasn’t any danger, and we should be able to go (‘if you’re going straight or turning left of course you need to wait, but right??’). When my dad heard my explanation he wrote to the state representative. A year or two later ads for ‘right turn on red after stop’ started running. I’m not claiming it originated with me, it may have been in committee before I thought of it, but I did think it up by myself.
