While spending a few million years evolving in space habitats instead of on a planet certainly guided their evolution, they’ve also been deliberately genetically modified by the Dilmun. I would imagine feathers in space ships and habitats served no benefit and added a fair bit of dust and castoff debris.
Ah, but the Dilmun themselves are described as bird-folk nearly identical to the evil birds on The Dark Crystal. Perhaps modding the K’sel to drop their feathers had more to do with making them look less like their gods?
