Hmm… the large, fin-like “wings” suggest the ship was at once time designed to maneuver in atmosphere… Hard to imagine given it’s size, but It is programmed for landings even if its current structural integrity can’t hold together for it.
As I understand it, the problem is not-so-much the structure, as-much-as the DELIBERATELY inappropriate approach-vector, which is intended to destroy the ship – no matter how well it’s been designed.
The issue was described as a structural problem caused by the age and lack of maintenance the ship had received. From the sound of it the ship was essentially mothballed after the rebellion and was only minimally restored to operation for this mission. There is still extensive battle damage that has closed off large portions of the ship and resulted in the launch bay Sky uses as her lab to be cut off from access to adults without greater risk than is worth getting to it. Rusty maneuvers as she needs to by walking along the outer hull, since she does not require air and this bypasses any physical blockages it works well for her. For air breathing creatures there is always some risk involved in a spacewalk so a stronger need would be required than exist for access to an unneeded portion of the ship. This vehicle was chosen for the size of it fabricators rather than needed crew or storage space.
