An old house, a geek, a cute transvestite, a very tall lesbian, and at least one ghost–what could happen? – Adult situations and artistic nudity. Not suitable for children.
I suspect that X is the only one who can tell Peach to just accept that Sky is a grown-up and have the words sink in. Mostly because Sky is X’s daughter of the heart, if not her body.
Ace could have also replied: “Because you said ‘we’ll go over the details later’. That’s a detail; not immediately relevant information that doesn’t have much impact on our current situation. Speaking of impacts… AND our current situation…”
“Innocence” …is not some special, magical quality. It’s simply ignorance, when adults find it “cute”. No more, no less. It’s absolutely NOT something we should try and preserve in children as long as possible, even well into their 20s, in any respect. That is not healthy or developmentally appropriate for them. Any parent attempting that is doing the young person harm and should be made to stop, for that child’s sake.
…Mind you, an 11-year-old having her first kill in battle is kind of an extreme example. Not the best one to make this point with, I fully admit. 😛
I’m thinking more about the type of parents who don’t want their kids to attend a proper sex-education class… ever. There’s a number of US states that have allowed these dangerous morons to have sway, and “teach” abstinence-only “education” (which can be summarized simply as NOT teaching sex-ed). Those states have seen teen pregnancy rates double and triple since the initiative went through. The whole rest of the country has seen a steady decline.
Sadly I work with someone who falls into your harmed innocent concept.
Our cleaner lived with her parents until they both passed away in the last few months. We’re now trying to desperately get her to understand the real world. She has never paid bills, has no real concept of the cost of living, never had a social life, never been on holiday. All her spare time was spent being her parent’s housekeeper. She hasn’t been more than a couple of miles from home since childhood, even though we’re in an area just outside London’s official edge that the growth of the city has swallowed. Not exactly isolated or lacking in public transport.
We suspect her brother is trying to guide her into a situation where he inherits everything, even though he moved out some time ago. She doesn’t seem able to grasp the implications of the situation, and we’re all worried she will end up homeless.
She’s fifty one years old. I never met them, but I’m coming to hate her parents for not ensuring she had a chance to live her own life.
