An old house, a geek, a cute transvestite, a very tall lesbian, and at least one ghost–what could happen? – Adult situations and artistic nudity. Not suitable for children.
Scare-mongering aside, predatory pedophiles (the very very few that actually exist) generally don’t prey on random children. They prey on children who are close to them, children they know. Strange kids they know nothing about aren’t interesting enough. This isn’t a vague or slight preference; statistically, children who have been abused are 161 times more likely to be abused by someone known to them (like their parents, another blood relative, or person who deliberately sought out a job that would leave them alone with children, ideally as an authority figure over them; See priests and scout leaders… and most definitely therapists specializing in abused children, unfortunately). Another statistic that flies in the face of people’s preconceptions is that the abuser is twice as likely to be female as male.
There’s not a person alive in this world in a position to do you more harm, than the one you call “Mom.” Bad mothers exist. Monsterous mothers exist. This webcomic showcases a few of them. They’re shocking and hateable characters… but not really hard to believe, are they?
Teaching children to fear “strangers” is very counterproductive. Not only is harm vastly more likely to come from a familiar direction, but teaching children to fear talking to strangers and view them as an ever-present threat, will keep them from seeking help if they ever find themselves REALLY in need of it. Realistically, every MAMMAL has a deep-seeded herd instinct to protect a child in distress. Strangers would LEAP at a chance to help your child if they’re in danger, or even just help them find a meeting place if they’re lost.
…or at least they used to. These days many people are so afraid of being wrongly accused of showing too much interest in a child that they might try and distance themselves rather than follow their first instinct to help. I don’t consider that a good direction for society to go.
Let’s get back on the subject of pedophiles:
There’s been some interesting studies in more recent years. Turns out something like 2/3rds of the people who sexually abuse children aren’t actual pedophiles. They have other psychological problems and are just taking them out on the children.
The great majority of people with the psychological illness pedophilia (and again, far less of them out there than you’ve been led to believe) are well aware they have a problem, still have a functioning moral compass, and spend their whole lives avoiding the temptation they know full well is very very wrong.
I myself am attracted to visibly adult women; that attraction doesn’t make me a potential or even a likely rapist, or have any desire to become one. Why would a pedophile be any different? They are still real human beings, not one-dimensional antagonists in a poorly-written drama.
One of the easiest things that helps them keep their darker urges under wraps, is satisfying them at home, by themselves, with the assistance of some drawn or animated online pedophilic porn; where no actual child has ever come close to being hurt or involved in the production thereof.
There’s no shortage of self-righteous prudish people who would like to completely and thoroughly ban all such non-live pornography from every dark corner of the internet (or these days, ALL types of pornography… but let’s stick to the subject of drawn pedo-stuff). I don’t enjoy or particularly like accidentally bumping into that sort of thing either (or most of the OTHER darker, more twisted types of animated pornography, if I’m being honest) but I don’t think “getting rid of it” is a good solution. To my thinking, that’s like having man-eating tigers in a zoo with a low fence, and believing that not feeding them will protect your bite-sized children in the tour group. No. Keep his stomach full up on plentifully available leftover pork please, so he doesn’t have any reason to jump the fence. Starving him to the point of desperation won’t end well for anyone.
This turned into quite the wall of text… but those are my thoughts on the matter.
