“Guess we better back up a bit”?
Back up from what? The kiss was the previous scene.
The kiss in their date clothes, two pages ago, was present time. The kiss in wedding clothes, last page, definitely was not. If you assume it’s a possible future, then we have backed up a bit from the future to the present.
Hmm… I’d taken that as Akane’s daydream/fantasy in the moment, not a real event. That confusing narrator box is about the only hint otherwise.
But… consider: Lady Banshee is planning to abduct Ace and most of his impressive friends for her colonization project, and stated she will do so immediately after the wedding (so as not to interrupt). If Team Ace somehow gets wind of this threat, stage a fake wedding, with Ace & Akane volunteering to be bait? I’m not sure how all the details would work, but it might be circuitous enough to get Akane into a wedding dress, kissing Ace. (Ace whispers: “I thought we’d be interrupted before we got this far into the ceremony.” Akane: “Any monster with such bad taste smart enough to know would be eating Akane’s katana backwards.” Lady Banshee: “She’s quite right; I know better.”)
Alternatively, in more recent comics, Ace has been warned “That girl would die for you, maybe you should give her a reason to LIVE for you?” She’s not disliked by the other girls. Polygamous wedding?
