A Man of Faith

I’m not a religious man. I don’t see why it’s necessary to make a god out of a great teacher, with the Message lost in the Myth. Time and again I hear that one must accept Jesus as a personal savior, because even a faultless life of charity and good will still means eternity in Hell without believing just so (and every other group’s “just so” beliefs are wrong). Frankly, it sometimes sounds to me like the company would be better.
Heaven or hell, I want to go where Ghandi and Mark Twain went.
Unfortunately the message of love and tolerance got lost in the quest for power. I’ve had more than once that I’ve asked someone where Jesus directed his followers to a path of hate and they either can’t tell me or the verses are the words of someone else (Peter despised everything Roman, and spoke out against anything they condoned but Jesus spoke of peace and forgiveness, even when the soldiers came to arrest him, even as he hung on the cross.)
Fundie: “Don’t you want to spend eternity in Heaven with me and Jesus?”
Me: “I frankly don’t want to spend the next two minutes with you. Wherever you end up, would probably be considered eternal torment to a lot of us.”
