An old house, a geek, a cute transvestite, a very tall lesbian, and at least one ghost–what could happen? – Adult situations and artistic nudity. Not suitable for children.
Well, given that Ace and Deuce both started out identical to each other and we don’t know when Trey came into being only that it had to have been a long time ago which implies time travel and we know that Deuce has traveled through time before…..Basically we know something happened, we just don’t know what, where, when nor why.
We still don’t know what the order is, but clues are tending to point to Trey being from Ace. Others make branch off from any of the three. We just don’t know yet. And Andy has thrown some lovely curve balls and sliders through the story as well as a red herring in the mix.
Slang terms have to be one of the hardest aspects of understanding a language. I actually have a dictionary of swear words in 5 different languages. I had a friends question the purpose of owning the book them answer their own question as they found out why they got slapped by the waitress when trying to order food in a second language. Seems what he requested was slang buy a sexual act.
You train hounds to hunt fox by dragging smoked herring, which is red, to lay a false scent trail to follow. Since you know where the trail is you can guide them down the trail till they figure out what you want them to do.
Because of this laying a false trail for somebody to follow is called a ‘red herring’.
A direct reference to a conversation Ace’s spectral self had with the “Bastian” kitty and former zen master who “walked him home” not very far back.
I’m taking that as a deliberately dropped hint.
Conscious, mortal Ace and his Spectral mind aren’t in total sync. The spectral one knows things he keeps from the conscious one, just giving him the most important hints he needs.
It’s also stated in the same convo that spectral Ace “grows stronger with each spirit walk”. Maybe strong enough to become a separate and distinct entity from the mortal, conscious Ace?
The next few pages give us a context for “Agent Ushur”, a.k.a. “Trey”. That he’s been around the afterlife scene for millennia. His hair is also a lot greyer than Ace’s. He mentions hiding a bald spot (not sure if that was a joke or not).
So clearly, this split hasn’t happened yet, but will sometime in the future as “Astral Ace” grows more powerful. There’s also apparently a time-loop involved where either Ace or Trey travel back to the much-distant past, and Trey proceeds forward through time normally, working for the Afterlife. Does Mortal Ace remain in the past, grow old and die… or does the event where he gets to return to the present also cut the final tie that prevented the spiritually strong Trey from splitting off from him?
There’s really nothing to suggest that a time-travelling Ace will make it “back to the future” (heh) other than I can easily see Andy writing the story that way. However, we also learn (or will eventually… can I avoid spoilers here? Maybe I can’t?) That there will be some strong hints that yet another divergent Ace will be several hundred years in the past and die saving the race of Orions, and his preferred name was “Quaid” (in other words, #4).
Okay given that this was just taught to Ace, I’m guessing that Trey is not a split from Deuce. Not hard core certain, but….
Why would he have been a split from Deuce? Same with the rest of the ‘splits’
Well, given that Ace and Deuce both started out identical to each other and we don’t know when Trey came into being only that it had to have been a long time ago which implies time travel and we know that Deuce has traveled through time before…..Basically we know something happened, we just don’t know what, where, when nor why.
The point was: why do each subsequent split have to be from the preceding one? And not all split from the same source: Ace

Oh don’t get started on red herrings, had enough problems with someone trying to explain the origins of that phrase in another webic 😛

Nice! I always love learning new things. You’ve made my day.
