Hm, likely the cheese caused problems as well. Not a lot of dairy products there in Japan. I remember having to learn to drink imitation milk there as a child. The real stuff tasted funny after moving back to the USA.
Half-Korean. She grew up in Japan and the lack of dairy products tends to run through most of the Asian countries. Beyond childhood, the majority of the Asian population is lactose intolerant. Eating dairy products seems to come from European bloodlines.
Specifically the Scandinavians, who learned that reindeer milk is a much more renewable resource during the winter than reindeer meat, and the steppe tribes who fermented mare’s milk to make alcohol, so if you wanted to get drunk you became tolerant of lactose.
There is also speculation that the ability to make and eat cheese helped people to survive through times of famine. Cheese and beef jerky are two of my favorite travel foods. I’m not big on breads, but flatbreads are tasty, add dried fruit and nuts for quick energy and I can manage weeks of travel with little variety.
