Wasn’t there something like “A” for for allies and friends? Not gay, but run in the same crowd?
Alejandro
How about “X” for cross-dressers like Carly? I know he’s gay, but he’s always been clear that he’s not, uh- Transsexual was it?
Kira
I don’t think-
Gary
“N” for nerds!

Kira
Nerds?!
Gary
They’re oppressed by the exact same people. They’re every bit “born that way” as anyone else could be. They could do with the social interaction and would bring free tech support to the community welcoming them.
Kira
You know, I can’t decide if you guys are trying to piss me off, or make me laugh.
Alejandro
I sign your paycheck.
Kira
Hah hah giggle snort.
Alejandro
And I have a shift leader position that needs filling.

so what changed her? i though she was the one that tried to break up the house. and in failing that tried to tempt ace?
Same, I thought she was a gold digger.
Having to work for a living, maybe?
She grew up. It doesn’t always happen, but it is nice to see when it does. If you think about it Pixie started out pretty shallow and self-centered, getting a job settled her down and got her acting more mature as well. Sometimes when we treat young people like kids, that is how they act, but when you start treating them like adults and expecting them to carry their share of the load, the rise to the challenge.
Why are you so sure she’s greatly changed her evil bitch personality?
Because she hasn’t done anything unforgivably horrible recently?
Put something (or someone) she wants in her line of sight, I be we see her show her true colours again.
Please tell me she’s going to correct them about the A standing for “asexual” and/or “aromantic” (and the spectrums thereof), not “ally.” We’re overlooked and ostracized enough even within the community and I need my A.
Oh, yes. The A also stands for “Agender.” I momentarily for got that in my fear that I would be swept under the rug again. Forgive me.
so with the a for atheists, one of allies, and one for the asexual, part of the movement should be to get the trippel A involved?
I for one cannot wait for the day that we don’t even need these.. I mean, whats so wrong with people being themselves without all these labels? Labels limit, not empower or define. I guess until we get to the point of not needing them they can be empowering, to know theres a broad term that includes you, but its the very need to have these labels that is the issue. This then puts a person in a box, and if the person has feelings for another that takes them outside the box, they might be ostracized even more for being wrong.
1 in 100k or worse odds hypothetical (I dont have actual numbers cause for this you kinda cant, I just know this would be such a rare example, or is it I dont know, that for the vast majority it would never apply). What if a gay man meets a woman that for him something is special enough that despite his overwhelming attraction to men, and perhaps even strong lack of interest in ever having sex with a woman, he gets with her for a while; they don’t necessarily get married or take it anywhere past a normal relationship for a while, but does this one exception mean he is not gay and suddenly falls under a different term, or can that label still apply?
I am asking this as a person that doesn’t understand. I believe I fall under pansexual and aromantic, just based on the definitions
I also believe that people need to be more accepting of people not under the original sex and hetero category, so that it can be safe to assume that until told otherwise because that is the “normal”. That people aren’t as accepting as they should be yet means people can be afraid to correct others, rightly so, but then that can lead to more problems down the road.
Any cat can tell you that there is a huge difference between being forced into a box and getting into the box yourself.
The labels we use are the ones that help us understand and feel comfortable with ourselves. They are not for other people to tell us who we are. They are for us to help us figure out who we are.
If someone doesn’t feel the need to label themselves, that’s totally fine and valid. If that person goes around telling the people who do feel the need to label themselves that they’re wrong to do so, that is not fine.
If someone feels that the label they’ve been using doesn’t fit them anymore and they want to use something else, that’s totally fine and valid. It doesn’t necessarily mean that they were wrong before, it just means they found a box that feels more comfortable to them now.
Yes, because people grow, and they change, not being allowed or able to ‘evolve’ is bad
Want to say more, butt, just can’t think of the correct words 🙁
Speaking as one for whom the labels did not yet exist I found it very difficult to understand my own identity. I understood that there were people whom like the opposite gender, people whom liked the same gender, and people whose bodies did not match the gender they saw themselves as. No one explained to me that there were people attracted to both, or whom sometime felt like one gender, sometimes the other, sometimes a blend of both and sometimes neither. It was very confusing and asking questions came with the risk of getting beaten to a bloody pulp. Finding a group of people who clearly stated that I had a right to live as I was and pursue my own happiness in the form it took for me was a massive blessing. Especially since they were willing to stand and guard my back while I figured it out and to get the government to recognize my existence as a person. The alphabet soup might be confusing but it prove a willingness to include someone who had to hide or modify themselves (lieing to yourself to fit in is not really very comfortable and neither is trying to hammer yourself into a box into which you know you don’t fit.
That said, there is a bit of politics in the whole process as well as an attempt to be accepting. The more we include the louder our voice and the more we can convince the government to grant us the equal protection under the law promised in the Constitution.
A is for Asexual, NOT allies
Why can’t it be for both? Unless you mean there should be more than one A, to place allies in a separate category?
“A” is for “Atheists” – Discrimination against nonbelievers in America is so overt and widespread that most are completely desensitized to it.
Atheists aren’t discriminated against, and only a godless heathen would claim they were.
Oh… and I’m agnostic at best.
Totally going with “messing with Kira” 😀
It might also be to get her to really think about their meanings, and not sprout cliches.
The easy-to-remember acronym used to be QUILTBAG to try and cover everyone with the A covering Asexual, Agender, and Ally, this was before Aromantic was officially a thing but I guess it was covered as well.
I don’t remember what all the letters stand for, but if you see a letter that is in your label, you’re part of the acronym.
Queer/Questioning, Undecided, Intersex, Lesbian, Transgender/Transsexual, Bisexual, Allied/Asexual, Gay/Genderqueer.
I think I like Quiltbag. I can come up with appropriate words for everything except the U without having to think too hard, the term is pronounceable and the connotations of the word fit the group well.
Yeah, was thinking that when it was mentioned on another page 😀
This is one of my problems with people. It does not matter who is calling them what, or what they are calling themselves. That is a label! Labels promotes hate. Different color, different mental capacity, different sexual preferences, different genitalia, everyone fits into one category and that is person. Every other label is there to separate, and when you separate you create a foundation for discrimination. It shows the incredible ignorance of individuals to stand there and say that they are this or that and not expect that the majority of others will treat them the same now that they have labeled themselves. Just like racist people see a label as an excuse to hate even though you look like them because you created the situation of making it an issue that you are different, not in skin color but in national origins, and your heritage is different than theirs so now they treat you different. STOP using labels! Are you a person? Fine, now leave it at that and let others treat you as a person. Unless someone is a close friend or potential romantic interest then it should not matter one bit if you are not the mystical (and likely non-existent) normal person. EVERYONE is different, those differences make you who you are. Hanging a label on yourself limits you because now you can stop thinking because you have a defined set of rules about what you like and dislike, who you can like and dislike, you are a quitter. Think for yourself and don’t use a label because I can guess that you don’t quite fit just perfectly and that means you are different, but you are scared of being different so you hide behind that label because it is safe to be able to point at it and say this is me.
Sorry about the rant, I truly HATE people that think a label defines themselves and others rather that just accepting that everyone should be treated by how they act and what they do rather than what they like or who they like.
Labels are used to describe people, and, in and of themselves, are not ‘evil’, it is how people view them that is the problem
Would you consider ‘Sweet Navel Orange’ to be bad? Afterall, it’s a ‘label’ describing a specific type of citrus fruit (which itself is a label describing a type of fruit)
N for Nerds is a surprisingly sound argument.
Although we might want to add geek, dorks, pagans etc. There are a lot of outcasts out there when it comes down to it, and the funny part is if we stick together instead of fighting for who gets what rights we are actually an majority voice. Rights have to include everyone or else they aren’t rights. They are privileges and those are not granted by the Constitution.
