Welcome to the Main Bridge, Just Ace.
Ace
Commander Denali? Didn’t you go off duty just a few hours ago?
Denali
That was my watch team’s Break Shift.
A shift, or milli-cycle, is about 7 of your hours. We usually do 2 Duty Shifts, separated by a Break Shift, and a Rest Period of 2 shifts.
Ace
So you work 14 hours in a 35 hour day? Sounds kind of rough.
Denali
Really? We usually get bored and spend time on side projects. There’s actually regs specifying rest and the time we have to spend on it.
Thank The Guide for coffee, though.

Ace
You don’t literally mean The Guide, do you?
Denali
It is said so. “Ka’va, the lifter of spirits,” he called it. Before his time, we have no record of anything like it.
Ace
That was 800 years ago. The earliest documented drinking of coffee was from the 15th century. But legends do put it’s discovery to the 8th or 9th century. And the plant did originate in Africa. But it still seems a stretch for an ancient Egyptian to have it.
Denali
Just one of many mysteries surrounding The Guide.
Ace
Did this “Guide” have a name?
Denali
Not that is recorded. He was simply addressed by an Old Orion word for a guide or leader, which is actually the same as an old Terran word for it, too.
“Quaid.”

I can also see how you could get “Quaid” from “Quad.”

“Quaid… start the reactor…”
No one else was thinking of the Quaid Brothers? o_O
Kava is not coffee, it’s not even close
Kava –> Java

I would guess that it would be even more unlikely that someone from that time period in Egypt would know about Kava Kava.
Simple: Quaid isn’t from that time period in Egypt
Oh yeah, Ace is starting to get an idea who the Mysterious ‘Guide’ is now 😀
And he’s going to start taking careful notes so that when it happens, he will be prepared 🙂
I’m less certain that Ace himself is figuring out that “Quaid” is a time-displaced him. He doesn’t know about “Trey”, and doesn’t appear to have found any time to think about “Deuce” since parting ways with him.
Trey (who remembers being time-looped back to Ancient Egypt… but not a timeline involving Orions at all) would probably be able deduce that “Quaid” is a 4th time-copy of Ace (after all, he’s the third himself) or he would if not for that Upper Limit problem that’s keeping all the spectrals from spying on what Ace and co are up to on the Orion ship in orbit past the moon, so he doesn’t presently know about this Guide at all.
For Ace, I think this would be too big a leap; he’s missing several very key pieces of the puzzle (and so is Trey) that only the audience (and Andy of course) presently have all together at this point. If he and Trey could compare notes, they’d have enough data points to have a suspicion, but that hasn’t happened.
Quad, after trace, after deuce, after ace, that means more time travel
The third one, who is busy managing (and banishing) guardian spirits, was “Trey” I believe, but yeah, we’re getting hints.
Some drift of pronunciation is to be expected over a period of centuries.
Quaid is a Urdu word meaning “leader.”
