I read an article once, about a paper published by some sociologists. They had interviewed hundreds of people who had been acclaimed as heroes, spread over five continents, looking for common factors.
They found no correlation with age, sex, race, religion, health, wealth, intelligence or education. In fact they only found two common factors. One was that there was never any deliberation involved: the hero-to-be saw a need, and acted on it instinctively. The other was that they all, without exception, were kind and helpful people in their everyday lives.
