An old house, a geek, a cute transvestite, a very tall lesbian, and at least one ghost–what could happen? – Adult situations and artistic nudity. Not suitable for children.
Four pet carriers, assuming the squirrel is either staying behind or separate that still means more than one cat per carrier. Or the Orions missed some of the cats because they weren’t in the house.
Still I would think that pet carriers for a spacefaring race would be vacuum-rated and not have open grates.
1 Pets are given a ‘shipsuit’ collar. The case is just to hold them.
2 There were only 4 cats & the squirrel still in the house when they were grabed. The squirrel is staying. The other 2 cats left with their owners before transportation.
Are we certain that they’re cats?
Given the pace at which this story progresses, they might still be kittens, in which case they might seek-out each other for mutual comfort.
Short of a pronouncement from the “Esteemed_Author”, can we be sure?
WRT the carriers having grating and thus not being safe in case of vacuum, if they have suites that can change shape to provide cover for head and hands, what makes you think pet carriers can’t close off openings?
I have explained in the past how Orion Ship Suits could be used on Earth in conjunction with the modern cellular phone system. It occurs to me that, since ship suits are safety equipment, it would be foolish for Ace and company to remove them before attempting to leave. This would give Akane the discreet armor she would be happy to wear to help protect Ace. I also just realized the potential that one would represent for Jaz.
Jaz could wear a ship suit over her prosthetic leg, that is simple enough and she should be doing it on ship or during the shuttle flight to begin with. But the suit could do much more than just be a cover. As seen in the past, it can be set into rigid shapes in set portions, meaning that the suit could replace the prosthesi. Additionally, either covering or replacing the prosthesis, a little tinkering with the programming of the suit, it could be set to match Jaz’s skin tone.
I’m sure that Ace might be able to whip-up a phone-app that allows you to control various suit-functions, complete with a handshake-protocol, to separate legit requests from “hacks”. A “plug-less” charging station could be used by both phones & suits, to keep everything powered.
Broadcast energy is a thing. The microwave system of the cellular phone network is broadcasting energy all the time,. The suits, at most, would need an adapter to fine tune the reception from the existing energy broadcasting system,

I just found a “SciShow”-sound-bite which I think might interest_&/or_amuse you, pertaining to this topic:

That was the original plan, but you know what they say:
“No Plan Survives First Contact With The Ship’s Transporter”
π
Since then, I suspect that she’s found the ship’s environment to be much too “cushy” a situation to abandon.

Based on this page, I’m pretty-sure that the squirrel is female, & in no danger of mistreatment:
…what remains unclear to me, is whether-or-not this is the first time that the Orions have “adopted” a squirrel.
I’d hate to picture her without any others of her own kind, with whom to play.
Hey Andy? Is there any rhyme or reason to your update schedule lately? Seems very irregular… and sparse. π
Now, you can (and should!) interpret complaints about having to wait for new updates as a sincere compliment to your work, but nonetheless: What can we expect going forward in terms of a schedule? I’d like to know so I’m not checking in for updates every day and disappointing myself. π
His post on the page says that while he’s scripted several more pages that his cat played with his computer glasses and lost them, and while he’d already ordered replacements, they will take a few weeks to arrive.(4-6 weeks total but ordered a few weeks ago).
Since even a short time on the computer gives him a headache without them we’ll need to be patient.
Yea, like looking for a promised sequel to a favorite book (that cost $4.99) every few months only to read from another source that it’s being released a chapter at a time on a site that charges $9.99 a month. At least I’ve heard the sequel is already over 3 times the length of the first. I’m still going to wait till it’s finished.

Well, not fully recovered but as good as he can be given the amount of initial damage. We are all hoping for a miracle, but nobody is expecting one. As the saying goes we are grateful for what we get.

Some people and equipment are out of frame, that’s all
Given the skin suit tech, it seems likely that they could also make animal carriers that would automatically seal in case of decompression.
Indeed. I’m betting those air vents can seal up in an instant.

Why do you assume there’s only one cat per carrier?
More than 50 years of owning cats makes me assume one cat per carrier.

Given that the kittens are of a single litter and still quite young, they will be more tolerant of sharing a carrier.

I gotta wonder – will it be Akane hunting down the squirrel that gets them caught?
The squirrel has emigrated and is staying in the ships park to be spoiled rotten.
Thought the squirrel was staying with Akane

Which page is “the page”? I don’t think I’ve ever read that update.
(Appreciate your explaining though!)

I admit that it’s disappointing to visit & see nothing new, but I feel that there’s lots of FAR_FAR_WORSE ways to be disappointed, so it’s all good.

Could always visit each day and vote
This too is an option, yes.

@Hinoron: Use an RSS feed reader. then it will tell you when there is an update so you don’t have to keep checking.
Andy is fully recovered? That’s great news!

Very much so (grateful that is), with whenever he is able to produce something, hopefully without putting any strain on himself
