I can think of worse role models for a doctor to have. Hawkeye may have had little respect for authority figures (unless they had really earned that authority) but he cared a great deal about people, and was fiercely loyal and protective of those in his care, (which included his comrades-in-arms.
Pierce and McIntyre called it “meatball surgery.” It’s been codified over the last 70 odd years now as “Damage Control Surgery,” and a fair number of the techniques described in the two primary books really do work!
“Meatball Surgery” is a term that predates both the Robert Altman film & the TV-Show that it inspired.
