I like the idea that Andy is using here, where Death’s cowl causes the illusion of the skeletal face. It’s the same thing that Piers Anthony used in, “On a Pale Horse“. I always felt that was the strongest one of the “Incarnation of Immortality” series.
I enjoyed all of them but they were a bit repetitive (your basically getting the story from multiple points of view with some overlap.) I’ll agree that On A Pale Horse was one of the best, but A Tangle Skein was one that I really enjoyed. I’ll admit that part of that was the weaving into the story some well known folk songs.

I think this is the first in-story use of the character Mercy. She’s been in some pinups and votecentives before, but never in-story.
