“Barbie” would transliterate as “ba-ru-bi” normally in the Japanese phonetics.
“barubi” is not a Japanese term I know, so on to Google Translate…
…Which tells me it’s a short form for “barbiturates”… which are a kind of sedative or muscle relaxant.
They have been used as sleep aids or anti-convulsants in small doses… but in high doses, they’ve been used for physician-assisted-suicides, euthanasia, capital punishment via lethal injection… and by veterinarians to put down animals.
Sodium Pentothal, is a particular form of barbiturate that has been used in interrogations as a “truth serum” (particularly in movies, where its effectiveness is exaggerated).
I’m not sure which of these uses Barbi finds most offensive to have her name compared to, or which most Japanese are assuming with the short form “barubi”, but I can see why she might not find the comparison flattering.
