So there I am, half naked, in the base commander’s truck, upside down in a tree. I looked him right in the eye and said, “Sorry, Sir, it’s above your security clearance.”

War stories indeed. I’ve had dates that ended like that.
Ah, the times that happened to me in the service…
1976, location still classified, different situation but same sentiment. The fact that it happened is no longer classified, we got flown into a country as kids taking a “gap year” and proceeded to blow up parts of their infrastructure already slated for replacement, then leave spent AK brass around and Russian cigarette butts near the demolition site. One of the bombs found another bomb somebody else left before we got there and the crater was about three times as large as planned.
Never anything classified as such…because at one time it was 8″ arty and others, well it’s 1st CAV innit? AA or Armor no hiding those kids. 😉 under 60 and I’ve been close enough to ARCLIGHT to shake the cobwebs out.
And it just came to me a few months ago where the “other” explosives came from, unexploded WWII ordinance, either a lot of shells or a pretty big bomb from the size of the crater. WWII ordinance would have had plenty of time to get unstable in the 30 years after the war.
