Peach:
You’ve lost another lander?!
X:
No wonder ours come under fire the moment they enter the atmosphere.
Peach:
What is this? Five?
Ixil:
Yeah. Five.
Gina:
Seven.
In US airspace.

Ixil:

So, is Ixil lying about losing only 5 landers, or is someone else using “Grey” style landers?
AH!
This explains Ixil’s “typo” on the previous page — it was supposed to be “LANDER” – not “LARDER”.
No, it’s larder. This page is the one with a typo.
Maybe he ransacked the Lander’s Larder, and left the crashed vessel with a full stomach. ^_^
Greens and greys say 5, Gina says 7. Someone else lost landers that the Greys and Orions don’t know about? This is starting to sound interesting. Someone was blowing up relays, not Orions and probably not Greys, and now we have more landers shot down than the Greys admit to losing. Confirmed there is a
third4th party with a finger in the pie of Earth operations if you count Terran population as a single entity for this purpose.Greens just speculated, or threw out a number based on partial information. Grey confirmed that 5 because it is less embarrassing than the truth. Gina knows it is at least 7, because she is aware of 7 in US airspace alone, but can’t speak for the airspace of the rest of the planet.
Sounds like the Terrans might have a couple landers full of clues, provided there was something to recover and assuming they can compare notes with the parties present to figure out which ones they can’t account for.
Which is, of course, moot until technical difficulties clear to the point where they can actually access them.
Hmmmmm…. Note: Nobody present knows whose additional at-least-two landers were lost. And nobody present knows who’s shooting them down. So there’s more than just one kid here who’s not answering the roll call. There’s at least two.
One unknown agency up to something is interesting, in a fairly dangerous way. Two is dangerous, in an extremely interesting way.
@[Bear]:
An alternate possibility — “Peachy” miscounted, then Ixil played along since the truth was even less-flattering …
( … it wouldn’t be the first time he’s “trolled” her with misinformation, as part of their ongoing elaborate game of “Prank War”. See “2019-02-02”[https://www.tmi-comic.com/comic/grey-matters] … )
…& then Gina called him out on it. Her final qualifier implies that there may be even more than 7, but she’s only responsible for keeping track of incidents in “U.S.” airspace.
It’s not the first time she’s called him out, either…

P.S.:
I’m puzzled by the change in my post’s text.
How did this happen?
( … I ask so that I can avoid repeating this … )
Probably forgot to close the italics after the first linkage
Happens to me occasionally, forget to put the / in the closing command)
Or… it could be something completely else
A thing that happens to me sometimes is that I accidentally close with another open tag. Ooops. With your question, I’d just assume that’s what I did and move on.
If you really want to know, I think you could ‘quote’ the original message on this BBS software by sending a different parameter for the value that’s normally set to ‘reply’ but on this particular page the ‘quote’ function isn’t enabled, and they’re using SEND rather than POST protocol for the parameters, so you can’t immediately see the name of that parameter you’d need to set.
Or maybe you just send ‘quote’ as a parameter with a value like ‘TRUE’ instead of setting some other parameter to true. It varies.
If you’re geeky enough, you can probably whomp up a ‘proxy’ made of a shell script containing one command line that uses ‘tee’ so you can see exactly what your browser is sending in the packets. And then another ‘proxy’ using a stream editor to change the value in-flight when you send it to the BBS.
Or, slightly less certain to work, you could just start taking guesses or look for online technical discussion that would reveal it, and paste your guesses onto the URL after a question mark.
Either of those, if they work, would get you the original text of your message so you could see exactly what you did.
But actually doing those things would reveal that you care a whole lot more about this than a normal person would.
@[Guesticus]&[Bear]:
Something about my choice of typographic style accidentally matched-up with a character-sequence that initiated a change in font-style.
This is NOT the first time, either
( … for example, some time before, I accidentally discovered that by “bracketing” text between 2 pairs of asterisks, I could “toggle” the bold-font on_&_off. Bearing-in-mind, not every commenting system processes these text-sequences in the same way … )
It’s kinda gotten me curious, but I feel strongly that it would be rude to clutter-up this discussion-area with various experiments.
Ultimately, though, it’s not vital-enough to obsess-over.
Notice, for example, that I used a “&” 3-character sequence twice above.
HOWEVER…
…the first time (between [Guesticus] and [Bear]), the comment-system REMOVED the “_”-characters, & toggled only the “&”-character as ITALIC…
…the second time, “Italic_Mode” was NOT toggled, so perhaps the Square_Brackets made the difference?
( … but if so, then why not remove them, along with the “underlines”? … )
It’s the first time that I’ve seen this happen.
Apart from all that 8th November, HAPPY BIRTHDAY Andy 🙂
Oh really? HAPPY BIRTHDAY, ANDY!
@[AndyOH!]:
“MANY_HAPPY_RETURNS_OF_THE_DAY!”
And may there be many more (healthy) to come
Hmm, “Seven. In US airspace.” kinda implies there have been more than just seven, or why the quantifier?
Might be saying that Gina can’t verify any landers shot down outside of US airspace, not that there were any.
She’s saying in US space where she has confirmation, there’s 7, outside that she’d only have rumors.
Just found these updates about a month ago…. so glad Andy’s back, but now I’m a bit worried as no update in almost 3 weeks? Or has the comic gone over to an intermittant schedule, due to his health?
Take it easy Sir!
Eli…
Lately he has been updating very speratically. He’ll go 2 months without an update then put out 2 in 2 weeks then nothing for a couple of months. Just check back every week or so.
Thanks for clearing that up for me… I’ll settle down with the rest of the gang, and check weekly now
I know he’s okay.
Eli…
As I understand it, he’s having trouble with vocabulary (aphasia), spelling, and typing which makes creating difficult. But he is still trying put out comics when he can. I’m assuming he’s doing better than he was after the attack, but I’m unsure how much better.
I think I speak for everyone when I say that I hope he takes whatever time he needs to recover. We love the comic, and want more, but his health is more important.
As a writer with aphasia, can concur it’s a cast iron bitch when the word you’re thinking of vanished from your vocabulary between the brain and the keyboard. Even worse when you’re halfway through typing it when the word disappears from your vocabulary.
Try having a spoken conversation with someone, and even simple words, like ‘tree’, vanish
You can almost still visualise what you want to say, it’s just the word to describe it has, well, gone: you know what it is, just literally can’t say it, and, unlike with people who simply don’t know what they want to say, you can’t ‘um’ or ‘err’ your way past it
Stay safe, enjoy the year that’s left us.
