When the Fat Lady Sings

As I mentioned, I’ve never seen “Das Rheingold”, but I’ve read about it. Seeing it is on my list of things to do. What I’ve never understood is why no one’s doing movies of it.

Probably part of it is disagreement on whether a movie version of Das Rheingold should be a musical or not, in English or not, and who best to make it. The original opera was performed in 1869, so it should be well beyond the clutches of even the most Disney-manipulated of copyright laws, making it public domain, so literally any film company in the world CAN make it without having to fork over a big chunk of their profits to a copyright holder.
It’s not a story familiar to most American audiences. Some producers might think that a handicap rather than an opportunity. I DO imagine the suggestion that the movie be in the original German meeting a lot of resistance to any US based producers.
