I’m not sure how you miss noticing when the batteries die. The chirping never fails to catch my attention, mostly by irritating the hell out of me.
The older ones didn’t chirp, but then again after 10 years you’re supposed to replace them anyway, the low grade radiation it uses to detect smoke decays below detection levels.
